Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Deputy Mayor Caswell Holloway and Department of Citywide Administrative Services Commissioner Edna Wells Handy joined representatives of the Hundred Year Association of New York on Wednesday, December 21st to honor 10 outstanding civil servants and 15 academically talented children of City employees, who received $17,500 in cash awards and $27,000 in college scholarships from the Association’s members.

Joining Commissioner Handy for the awards ceremony at Police Department headquarters were Department of Parks and Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe; Department of Homeless Services Commissioner Seth Diamond; Department of Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty; Small Business Services Commissioner Robert Walsh; Human Resources Commissioner Robert Doar; and representatives of the Hundred Year Association and its 200 member organizations.

“Today, with the help of one of our city’s great community organizations – the Hundred Year Association, we’re honoring the very best of New York by recognizing 10 of our most committed, exceptional public servants,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “We’re also taking the opportunity to invest in the dreams of some of our best and brightest. Our youth are the future of New York, and the young scholars we’re honoring today re-affirm that our city’s best days are still ahead.”

Deputy Mayor Holloway said, “New York City continues to be a place where over eight million people live, work and play every day because of the essential services that the City provides, first and foremost public safety. Our City has the greatest public servants in the world, and it is an honor to work alongside them. Today, with the help of our partners from the Hundred Year Association, we celebrate them and their children, whose achievements will build an even stronger future for New York.”

“The civil servants we honor today bring prestige to the City by going beyond their job descriptions to give New Yorkers world-class service, every single day,” said Commissioner Handy. “We are proud to assist the Hundred Year Association in rewarding the achievements of our city workforce and the broad range of vital work that they perform.”

“On behalf of the Board of Governors and members of the Association we thank Mayor Bloomberg, Commissioner Wells-Handy and her staff for their assistance in supporting and organizing this unique Public / Private Program, created to recognize and reward outstanding achievement in the workplace and in the classroom,” said Clinton W. Blume, III – President of The Hundred Year Association of New York.

This year’s highest Public Service Award, a $3,500 award, sponsored by The Chief-Civil Service Leader, went to Police Officer Dawn Townsend, a 21-year veteran of the Police Department who has served as Community Affairs Officer at the 73rd precinct for the past seven years. She has been a volunteer facilitator of a women’s empowerment group for the past five years, providing education and access to family planning and domestic violence resources, as well as educational and employment opportunities, and training in proper etiquette. She has worked continuously with the Brownsville Partnership and other Brownsville-based community organizations on issues of job training and readiness.

The largest scholarship, the $5,000 Elaine Wingate Conway College Scholar Award sponsored by Conway Foundation, went to Stephanie Guevara, a junior at Hunter College of the City University of New York. She is the daughter of Alva Guevara and the recipient of a New York State TAP Grant.

Since 1958, the Association has highlighted the close partnership between the City’s private sector and City government by recognizing outstanding career civil service employees. Named for the Association’s founder, the Isaac Liberman Public Service Awards are available to employees whose salaries do not exceed $81,000. Individual cash awards range from $1,000 to $6,000.

The Association’s E. Virgil Conway College Scholar Awards Program was founded in 1971 to assist academically qualified children of career civil service employees to obtain college educations. College Scholar Awards are granted to promising students whose gross family incomes do not exceed $110,000. The scholarships recognize excellence in scholastic achievement and community service. College scholarships generally range from $1,000 to $6,000.

The Manhattan Chamber of Commerce sent us this announcement over the weekend and we would love it if one of our members could qualify! Please read on below:

If your business has seriously been thinking about Going Green, a unique opportunity has just emerged. A Certified Green Consultant in New York City is working with CNBC on a career transition segment, possibly called “From Wall Street to Green Street”. There will be two pieces to the segment: the transition interview and a walk-through with a client of the process to green a business – from assessment through certification. Each piece will air 1-2 minutes.

This is therefore a request to find a business not just for the show but to actually sign on as a client and go through the process of earning your certification for greening your business practices.

To qualify, your business must be in New York City and be available for 2-3 days for the preparatory work and a day of shooting over the coming 1-3 weeks. Key company personnel should be available for interviews. While CNBC retains the right to produce the final version of the show, the company will be allowed to assist in presenting its best side.

One company will be chosen that best suits the criteria for this program. The residual benefits of this exposure should be obvious. CNBC is a heavy hitter in the marketplace, and while the segment is focused on careers in transition, your business will get exposure during the green certification process segment. The CNBC programming, however, is only part of the exposure that the selected company will enjoy. The Green Business League, who provides the national certification, has made agreements to promote this program through a hard-hitting Internet campaign that will be spread throughout the country.

To submit your business for consideration, please email a brief description of your company to michele.moran@mandmgreensolutions.com. Also include any steps you have taken to-date to green your company. One and only one business will be chosen. This is not a sales promotion or an effort to sell products. The filming schedule will occur shortly after the selection is made, and the company will need to be flexible as to the time constraints. The timeline for this offer is VERY short.

The Green Business League certification will be an actual process, which will include:

Assessment

Development of Sustainability Plan with tradespeople

Training

Supply Chain Management

Development of Sustainability Policies

Assistance with marketing

The certification process will naturally continue well beyond the taping of the show, which has an immediate timeframe. This certification program is about your daily operating practices, not about the building, and is therefore affordable.

The Green Business League is a well-respected authority on Green business. It is a national program, which has begun expanding overseas.

Good luck and let us know if you apply!

The Hundred Year Association of New York honored the 2009 winners of the Isaac Liberman Public Service Awards and E. Virgil Conway College Scholarships in a special ceremony on December 16, 2009. Department of Citywide Administrative Services Commissioner Martha K. Hirst lead the event, held at One Police Plaza.

Each year, the Hundred Year Association reviews the achievements of City employees to identify those who, through dedication beyond their job descriptions, have provided outstanding service to the people of New York City. The Association also awards scholarships for the children of career civil servants. Winners are chosen by an Awards Committee. Recipients of the awards receive between $1,000 and $6,000. The 25 winners this year were granted $54,000.

“This year’s Public Service Award winners highlight the broad range of vital work that civil servants perform,” said Commissioner Hirst. “Whether they are improving public health, keeping students safe, or helping entrepreneurs grow their businesses, our winners bring prestige to the City by going beyond their job descriptions to give New Yorkers the best possible service, every single day,” said Commissioner Hirst.

“For over 50 years, we’ve been proud to honor the City employees who make New York such a great place to live, work and play, and we are equally proud to support the education of so many deserving children of civil servants,” said Clinton W. Blume III, the President of the Association.

This year’s highest Public Service Award, a $6,000 award sponsored by Consolidated Edison Company of New York, went to Sharraine Franklin, a Public Health Educator for the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Ms. Franklin works in the South Bronx for the Public Health Detailing Program, which sends field workers out to the City’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods to visit local physicians and share techniques for helping patients with critical public health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and depression. Her daily efforts embody the City’s mission to promote the health and mental health of all New Yorkers.

The largest scholarship, the $6,000 Charles E. Inniss College Scholar Award sponsored by National Grid, went to Tiffani Branch, who is a senior at Stony Brook University, where she is pursuing a degree in international relations and economics. Her mother, Noreen Branch, is an Educational Assistant for the Department of Education.

The Hundred Year Association has selected The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America as this year’s recipient of its annual Richard A. Cook Gold Medal Award. Guardian President and CEO Dennis J. Manning accepted the award at a fundraiser gala on December 10th 2009 at the Union League Club. Presented to remarkable leaders and contributors to the city of New York, the award has been granted every year since 1930 (except during WWII) “in recognition of outstanding contributions to the city.”

The Hundred Year Association is granting the 76th annual award to Guardian in recognition of its 150th year of service to the population it serves as well as its strong tradition of public involvement and giving back to the communities in which they operate. Past recipients of the award include civic leaders Robert Moses, E. Virgil Conway, Robert Morgenthau and Ray Kelly; Mayors Fiorello LaGuardia, Robert Wagner, Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg, entertainers Oscar Hammerstein, Richard Rodgers and Tony Randall; and three generations of Rockefellers.

Guardian is one of the largest mutual life insurance companies in America. As a mutual company, Guardian has no shareholders and is managed completely in the best interests of its policyholders – a powerful difference between Guardian and many other financial services companies.

“From its beginnings in New York in 1860, serving the immigrant German population and small business community, Guardian’s total focus has been on the care and well-being of its policyholders” says Association President, Clinton W. Blume, III. “Guardian’s strong track record of financial stability and adherence to strict ethics make it a symbol of strength to the millions of Americans who rely on the company for insurance, employee benefits, investments and retirement solutions.”

Guardian CEO Dennis J. Manning is enthusiastic about his company’s corporate citizenship. “Guardian helps people build better tomorrows with the products we offer, the relationships we build, and by making our communities better places to live.” he says. “ Throughout our nearly 150 year history, Guardian has maintained a strong tradition of public involvement and giving back to the communities we serve through philanthropic giving and the volunteer activities of our associates across the country.”

Guardian supports a wide variety of not-for-profit organizations in the areas of community services, health and human services, education, and the arts and cultural institutions. In addition, Guardian continues to focus on serving the needs of small business owners throughout the New York area and across the country.

“I am honored to accept this award on behalf of Guardian’s more than 5,400 dedicated employees here in New York and across the country, as well as the members of our network of over 3,000 financial representatives in over 80 agencies nationwide, and in honor of the thousands of associates in our home office and distribution network who helped build our great company over the past 150 years” Manning added.

The Association presented the Richard A. Cook Gold Medal to Guardian during its annual gala fundraiser event on December 10, 2009 at the historic Union League Club.

Will’s son Neil took over in 1986. He and Vice President Michael Driansky continue to provide the freshest and finest quality seafood from all over the world, flown or trucked into New York on a daily basis. The diversity of stores and restaurants Caleb Haley serves is matched by the diversity of their product line. Their employees are dedicated and loyal, many having remained with the company for decades.

During the peak hours of 2 – 5 AM, business is booming at the fish market. Wholesalers, seafood retailers, supermarkets, discerning restaurateurs, and customers from around the country descend on the Hunts Point section of the Bronx, in search of fresh and frozen seafood.

In November, 2005 after 180 years of operation in Manhattan’s southern tip, the Fulton Fish Market relocated its operations to the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center in the Bronx. The fully-indoor 400,000 square foot facility is refrigerated to a cool and controlled 41 degrees.

Inside the $86 million complex, vendors and customers scoot about in their preferred mode of transportation: golf carts, used to trade, barter and acquire the best quality of fresh fish, fresh seafood, fresh fillets and frozen fish and fillets.

From the moment they joined last year, Michael Driansky has been an enthusiastic supporter of The Hundred Year Association. He quickly joined the committee that selects the student-winners of 2007 Scholarship Awards and made Caleb Haley a sponsor of one of the awards.

Krista Behrens, an employee of the Bank of New York (1785), and Sergei Mizevych from the Ukraine, met through mutual friends in Moscow.

They married during their lunch hour at City Hall on December 18, 2006.

As they walked around the city in the evening, the poster for the Oratorio Society of New York (1873) Messiah performance caught their eye. They had never heard the Messiah before and decided it was the perfect way to spend their first evening as husband and wife together. They bought tickets for the upper balcony and pronounced the performance “Beautiful” and “Affordable.”

Best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Mizevych!

In the first of a new series of programmatic get-togethers focused on educational topics of benefit to members, the Association hosted noted investor and entrepreneur Rob Slee on Wednesday, April 14th. Several dozen members and friends enjoyed complementary cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while listening to Mr. Slee’s presentation.

Owing to the fact that small businesses account for half of the country economy and 80% of its new jobs, the program aimed to demonstrate to owners and managers of privately held businesses how to dramatically increase the value of their businesses. Because if the private business sector fails, so will America.

The talk was based on Mr. Slee’s book Midas Managers: How Every Business They Touch Turns to Gold, which profiles business men and women who have that magic touch – constantly increasing the value of their holdings regardless of industry conditions or cycles. It attempts to glean specific lessons from their experiences, teaching readers – and attendees of the event – how they too can become “Midas Managers,” ultimately doubling revenues and raising profits at least ten-fold – with half the number of employees.

Program attendees each received a complimentary copy of the book.

Following his own advice, Mr. Slee has, at any given time, numerous equity positions in a variety of mid-sized private businesses. He has authored more than 100 articles and his earlier book Private Capital Markets is considered the seminal work in finance and strategy for private companies.

The event was partially sponsored by Midas Advisor Salvadore R. Salvo, co-founder and principal of Summit Financial Resources, a think tank for innovative financial strategies and high net worth families and businesses. Mr. Salvo also spoke during the evening about how his sophisticated planning process helps families and businesses clarify their vision, integrate their financial affairs and realize their goals.

For more information about Mr. Slee or Mr. Salvo, contact D. William Sterns at 973-285-3600.

Future events will be announced soon. All members, their employees and Association supporters are welcome. Members are encouraged to help plan or suggest topics of particular interest to them. Contact the Association for more details.
