In 1859, Scottish fisherman Caleb Haley began selling all varieties of fish and seafood in the historic Fulton Fish Market underneath the Brooklyn Bridge. William Smith purchased Haley’s eponymous company in 1938 and grew it into the largest seafood company in the largest consortium of seafood wholesalers in the country.

Will’s son Neil took over in 1986. He and Vice President Michael Driansky continue to provide the freshest and finest quality seafood from all over the world, flown or trucked into New York on a daily basis. The diversity of stores and restaurants Caleb Haley serves is matched by the diversity of their product line. Their employees are dedicated and loyal, many having remained with the company for decades.
During the peak hours of 2 – 5 AM, business is booming at the fish market. Wholesalers, seafood retailers, supermarkets, discerning restaurateurs, and customers from around the country descend on the Hunts Point section of the Bronx, in search of fresh and frozen seafood.
In November, 2005 after 180 years of operation in Manhattan’s southern tip, the Fulton Fish Market relocated its operations to the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center in the Bronx. The fully-indoor 400,000 square foot facility is refrigerated to a cool and controlled 41 degrees.
Inside the $86 million complex, vendors and customers scoot about in their preferred mode of transportation: golf carts, used to trade, barter and acquire the best quality of fresh fish, fresh seafood, fresh fillets and frozen fish and fillets.
From the moment they joined last year, Michael Driansky has been an enthusiastic supporter of The Hundred Year Association. He quickly joined the committee that selects the student-winners of 2007 Scholarship Awards and made Caleb Haley a sponsor of one of the awards.
